The Shadow Mage had determined that we had the combined skills for his task.
None of us trusted the other, and we all equally despised the assassin, a drow elf. We wandered for weeks in the Kylindrin Forest. One night the drow said we were getting close, but said no more. The moon disappeared behind a cloud and never returned. I could see nothing. After hours, thinking I was hopelessly alone, I heard the drow’s voice all around me chanting, “Umbral Fae. Umbral Fae.”
That was followed by the screams of my thief companions being slowly skinned by what I would later learn were Fae faeries.
Why I was spared I do not know. I woke in the forest alone, save for the cadavers. I returned to Corsian, took a small room, and I haven’t slept in days. I write melancholy lyrics, pretending I’m making progress, but I can’t get the drow’s chanting out of my head.
They will come for me. They have to know what I stumbled upon while groping in the dark.
