Underdark adventures can be excellent fun! They also come with their own challenges. You’ll be navigating an entirely different world. Don’t go underground until you’ve read these ten tips for survival.

1. Consult an NPC
No need to reinvent the wheel. Find an NPC that’s traveled the Underdark and ask questions about what you should expect. Remember, when you talk to an NPC, you’re really talking to the DM, who might just give you some vital information for the quest ahead!
2. Consider a Guide
You can do more than talk with an NPC. You can employ one! Find someone who knows the Underdark. A dwarf would be excellent! Having a knowledgeable guide will be well worth the coins spent.
3. Plan Your Provisions
Trading posts and villages won’t be as plentiful in the Underdark. Bring hardy rations that are lightweight, but filling and nutritious. Pay the extra for high-end rations. It will be worth every gold piece.

4. Forage
To spare your rations, look for opportunities to forage or even fish. Do the research to find out what Underdark vegetation might be edible. Underground lakes and rivers have fish. Consider lightweight fishing supplies, or taking the food from fallen enemies.
5. Remember the Light
It’s dark in the Underdark. Be sure to bring sources of light and fuel to keep them going. Again, not a time to be frugal. Spring for lighting supplies that last a long time. You do not want to be caught in the dark with predators that are used to lowlight! Be sparing with your light and extinguish it when natural light (glowing mushrooms, lichen, etc) provides enough for you to see.
6. Use Light Cautiously
Light can be a lifesaver, but also a dangerous thing. A real elves riddle. Light helps you see and can even attract sources of food. It can also attract predators. Be extra vigilant when lighting your way and make frequent stops to listen for approaching predators.
7. Other Supplies
The Underdark will bring terrain challenges. It’s a good idea to purchase rope, grappling hooks, climbing spikes and rappelling gear. Be prepared!

8. Ranged Weapons
If you rely heavily on bows, crossbows or other range weapons, remember the lack of trading posts. Double up on ammunition while you’re aboveground. With stone all around you, it’s likely your arrows will be broken even if you do find them. Don’t get caught with an empty quiver when you stumble upon that cave troll!
9. Respect Underdark Inhabitants
Gnomes and dwarves are skeptical of above ground dwellers. They might have supplies to sell or trade, but they need to be willing. Show them respect in your manner of speaking. Find out in advance what kinds of cultural norms you’ll need to be aware of. You don’t want to make a misstep and find a store full of vital supplies closed to your purchasing because you called someone “shorty”!
10. Sound
Predators in the Underdark have adapted to their environment and can be sensitive to vibrations and loud noise. Don't let that piece of armor fall down the well. Sources of meat are scarce and, guess what… you’re a source of meat. Underdark predators look for opportunities to ambush, trap, and lure their prey. Does that light dangling ahead look benevolent? It might very well be connected to a sharp-toothed creature angling you in. Think like an Underdark predator and make your decisions very carefully to avoid becoming a meal!
